The Heavy Purse Teaches Children to Save, Spend and Share.
Follow Lauren and Taylor as they discover how to use their magical coins to bring joy into their lives and others.
MANHATTAN BEACH, California – April 24, 2012 – Shannon Ryan is a mom and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) on a mission: to increase financial literacy in children.
“In between school, sports, activities and friends, many parents struggle to find time to teach their children the basics of money management or don’t feel prepared to be the teacher. Regardless of the reason why, our children need to understand how money works because everyone handles money, often sooner than we think.”
Ryan credits her father, Harold Neibling, for creating her passion for financial literacy. As a successful surgeon and business owner, he knew the importance of money management and began giving Ryan money lessons when she was thirteen. His teachings eventually led her to a career as a financial advisor. In her nearly 20 years helping clients feel more prepared financially, Ryan understands that how you think about money is the key to financial success.
“Kids hear more than we think. We often pass along our money hang-ups to our children without even knowing it. Believe me, you think they’re not listening, but they are and their observations leave a lasting impression on them.”
Ryan wants her daughters, Lauren and Taylor, to understand that managing their money doesn’t need to be complicated or combative. Instead, it can be easy, fun and help the girls regain control of how they use their money, thus eliminating most store aisle tantrums.
“My girls are six and eight and still see things they want in the store, but most often they conclude that whatever they just saw is not worth having to push out or forgo their original goal. I still get a kick out of them making their own decisions, owning it and not having to say no all the time.”
Inspired by real events, Ryan wrote The Heavy Purse to be more than a typical children’s picture book, but also a conversation starter for families. A simple way for parents to help their children, at any age, enjoy a healthy and joyful relationship with money as they learn how-to save, spend and share.
The Heavy Purse will be available on April 24, 2012 at the following retailers:
- Amazon (in print and e-book format for Kindle Fire only)
- Barnes and Noble (in e-book format for Nook Color only)
- Pages a bookstore
Pages is hosting a Reading and Reception on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at their store in Manhattan Beach, CA. Readings will be at 4:30 and 6:30 PM. Ryan will be available throughout the event to answer questions and sign books.
